Introduction

This web site is the hub for the "Dictionaries and reading materials in local languages project", hereafter referred to as The Project. It was initially made for Ugandan languages (which is reflected in the information on this site) but both the material and the information can be used for any language in any country.

The aim of The Project is quite simply to make affordable dictionaries and reading materials in local languages. This web site will provide you with information and materials for doing so.

The key to success

There are two "secrets" to making affordable materials. The first is teamwork and a volunteer spirit. This project is only possible because people work together, and because we all do it without any remuneration other than seeing children and grown-ups being able to afford dictionaries and reading materials in their own language. The second "secret" is photocopying in large quantities. Traditional printing is too costly and inflexible. By photocopying we spend just a little more than the price of the paper, which is why a 24 page booklet with a cover (such as a dictionary) can be sold for about 20 cents!

Any questions, contributions, changes etc. can be made to the project coordinator.
